preservatives, GMO food, and GMO feed, many people are looking for an alternative for their food supply. Many are looking for a healthier lifestyle after suffering from one condition or another. We, ourselves, looked for a means to grow and raise
all of our own food. It has been a long journey to the place we are now, learning as we went. The typical 'learning the hard way'
motto often comes to our minds, as we smile contently and 'remember when....'
oh, how many times we have heard, 'you do what?' and smile more broadly as so many walk away shaking their heads. We started changing our lives in the early 90's, continuing to raise rabbits, as my father had. We started learning everything we could about medicinal herbs. Wild harvesting what we could locally. We started growing our own vegetables, learning to can, hot water bath at first, then pressure canning. We moved to growing our own fruit, raising chickens, learning other means to preserve food. We learned all we could about companion planting, crop rotation, and growing without the chemicals that are so common today. We started saving our seeds, adding goats to the mix. We learned how to make cheese and soap. We added natural feeds for our livestock, including growing some of our own. We make our own wines & liquors'; our own medicinal products; and have switched over to all non-GMO, non-commercial foods.
Are we there yet? That place when we know we are done? No, we
still have a list of changes we are making with our lives. Some of our long term goals are still to grow 'at-risk' medicinal herbs, teaching others how to do it themselves, preserving those small medicinal herbs patches that are slowly disappearing from local natural habitats. We are hoping to grow all our own livestock feed, luckily we found 'safe' food for the interim. We choose to do as much as possible, as our father's fathers did, using human power over electric.
We chose to start our website to share our experiences with
others who may be looking to change, as we have. There will be blogs on gardening, starting seeds, saving seeds, and preserving foods. Livestock, as in goats and rabbits will be covered, as will natural products and methods that we use. We will try to cover as much as we can, at times that will benefit you, so have patience there is so much to cover. For medicinal herbs, do look at www.montanaherbalist.com for information. There is as much, or more, to cover that needs a space all its own. Please feel free to
contact us over subjects you would like to see............and as always, feel free share your views.
May love surround and sustain you............
