At last March Madness is over!

With the last of our does (MTH Zuri) gracing us with so much color, we are so very thankful for an uneventful - eventful few days........ LOL.  With the prior brood taking a nap, we weigh and feed our two new additions.  We had as many bucklings as doelings, but delight in knowing we have 8 more sucklers' thinking we are just TOO GRAND & the dams are all well and resting.

Our Akita 200 security system was busy updating their 'babies to protect' list, sniffing bottoms and wagging tails as they went.  Never before have we felt so joyful, with these 8 little (& big) bundles of joy.

If nothing else, this night they won't be the only ones sleeping like babies!

Blessings

twins and quads saying hello!
As the kids' started coming - we rushed here and there.  Wondering what furry bundles we would be blessed with.  Then our first set of QUADS came rushing out - we were to busy cleaning faces as our Mischief started calling to all.  Now as the dust settles we find 'our brood' of six still getting there land legs as they tumble about one another.

Starting Seeds Indoors

As the snow falls lightly outside our window, the sunset's glow painting pink the mountains that surround us, memories of past gardens tickle the corners of our minds.  Anticipation of fresh greens, fire side roasted root vegetables, and sweet fruits of Seaberries excite us.

With such a short growing season, Memorial Day to Labor  day, many of the foods we grow need an early start that nature here does not  provide.  With heirloom seeds from  Siberia, North Dakota, and Canada, many of the crops we grow can simply be   started outdoors.  Such as peas,  beans, lettuce, spinach, carrots, corn, and more, but what of those that require  more than 90 days from seed to harvest?  We furnish an extension to our growing season by starting seeds  indoors.

When starting seeds indoors, you need to consider five things: temperature, water, lighting, soil, and seeds.

Why De-budding?

3/4/2013

As the kidding season quickly arrives, for some the kid critters are already here, de-budding is a  question that often is asked.

Goats, as a breed, are naturally horned animals.    A goat can be 'polled', meaning born without the possibility of horn  growth, but that is usually not the case.

De-horning goats is not a topic that many like to discuss,   but it is a decision you need to make if you are going to have goats.

There are 'two camps' those believing  that a goat should be horned and those that choose to de-bud.

Why would someone want to  keep a goat horned?  That is an future blog.  Due to our strong  belief in de-horning goats kept as livestock, we will have a view presented by  someone who has horned goats - we feel that we are too bias to fairly present the pros of keeping a goat horned.   We feel that both views should be covered to give you the information, so  you can make the best choices for you and your herd.

Seeds? Which Seeds? Which Plants?

With the promise of spring  slowly peeking around the corner, garden plans usually start teasing the edges  of our mind....
......whispering of the new shades of green and smells of freshly cut grass.  Oh, how the prospect of  fresh......anything, teases and entices us!

Planning a garden, whether  vegetable or flower, seeds often play a huge part of that planning. Decisions made should include:
